I collect selfheal (prunella vulgaris) from my property to make this tincture. I carefully pick the flowers from each plant and avoid any leaves. The flowers are very light, so it takes a great deal of them to make a 1:2 ratio! It's 60% ABV, which captures the desired properties from this plant most effectively. Selfheal is in the mint family (square stems!), and all mints will oxidize quickly after picking. So, this tincture does turn brown easily. This tincture may have some sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Made on 8/20/24. This tincture is discounted & a fresh batch will be available in 2026 at the regular price.
Ingredients: fresh selfheal flowers (no leaves), menstruum = Everclear + spring water. Made 1:2, approx 60% ABV.
Selfheal is not one of those flashy plants in the herbal world, and most people see it as a weed. But like many 'weeds', it has some amazing properties. The compounds in selfheal support adrenal & pituitary health indirectly, can mildly modulate inflammation, & supports reproductive wellness, uterine tissues, & the vascular system. It's a great plant to use on skin, for wounds & minor injuries. I have used it to successfully calm bee stings on several occasions (just grab a few flowers, chew until pulpy, apply directly on sting as quick as possible. Works best if you can get it on the sting right away. Add some plantain leaf with it and even better!). I add selfheal infused oil to my herbal face serum for its skin properties. But for me, the most impressive quality of selfheal is its immune modulating properties. It's often called 'heal all' because that's sort of what it does... it tends to be supportive for 'all'. It seems to adjust itself to what the body needs. There are a few plants that do this (medicinal mushrooms for instance), but they are harder to come by than selfheal. This plant is readily available in most areas! It's also shown to reduce excess estrogen, which many people unknowingly have by consuming processed foods (think extra fat tissue in the breast area, skin tags, sluggish digestion).
Plant ramble: Self heal on my property is often in a mosquito infested area & I look pretty insane while harvesting these, swatting every few seconds & using my hair to whip the bugs away from my face. Seems like the sweatier you are the more they bite too:) I'm one of those people that mosquitoes & biting flies 'love' (damnit).
