White pine tincture (Pinus strobus) is a high quality, double extract, made with fresh foraged needles. The second extraction is to secure suramin/shikimic acid content via a strong tea of the needles (in spring water). Strained on 4/2/25.
Ingredients: fresh Eastern pine needles, menstruum is Everclear + spring water in 1:2, 50% ABV
White pine needles are warming, drying, antimicrobial & also expectorant. Evergreens are often used in the colder months for winter ailments, like cold & flu - when you have damp, cold symptoms like the chills! The double extraction offers some shikimic acid content, which science denies as having any effects on flu symptoms, but I include it for those that want it:)
Pine ramblings:
My property is full of evergreens (mostly Eastern White Pine) and I love each tree:) I've made various things from them, including wreaths, spruce tip infused honey (this is utterly delicious btw:)), pine needle tea, holiday swag for my front porch, fermented pine needle soda (delicious if you refrigerate it before it gets too 'boozy'), tinctures and balms of course, and I will use dried out pine branches/wood to bury for hügelkultur mounds. They are also home to lots of squirrels, the occasional bird nest & sometimes birds of prey will nest in them. The deer will eat the bark in winter and seem to like sleeping near these trees. The smell is always a joy as it reminds me of going 'up north' when I was a child growing up in Michigan:)
